Vattenfall Enhances Bird Monitoring
Monitoring seabird movements to support protection efforts
Vattenfall is enhancing measures to protect bird populations at the Hollandse Kust Zuid (HKZ) offshore wind farm. We have installed 16 thermal cameras operating around the clock, using AI to analyse bird behaviour and detect collisions. Trialing this innovative system aims to provide accurate data on bird collisions at offshore wind farms. This will help gain new insights on the topic.
By using recent developments in computer vision and machine learning, the study aims to develop algorithms that accurately identify bird collision events from video footage. The cameras, previously used successfully onshore, are now being deployed offshore for the first time. This project is expected to offer valuable insights into the impact of wind turbines on bird populations and help refine mitigation measures.
We are working with several partners, including Wageningen Environmental Research, part of Wageningen University & Research (WUR), Wildlife Imaging Systems, and Circle Consult Aps[1], combining expertise in bioscience, AI and camera technology, and environmental research to ensure the project’s success.
