Several porpoises spotted near Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm

Special visitors at Hollandse Kust Zuid wind farm! In past weeks, several porpoises swam in and around the wind farm. Among them were porpoise calves as well. Young porpoises are born every year between May and August after a gestation period of 11 months. Did you know that the calves are already half the size of their mother at birth? They weigh around 5 pounds and are 70 to 80 centimeters long.

Curious? Watch a video of the porpoises below, taken from an HKZ wind turbine.

The construction and operation of wind farms must not be at the expense of biodiversity: that is Vattenfall’s belief. That is why research teams work hard to increase knowledge on the impact of offshore wind farms. You can see which studies we are conducting to conserve porpoises and other mammals around offshore wind farms here.
